When I think of coastal home decor, I think a lot of DIY shiplap walls! After much discussion, my handy husband and I decided to redo the walls in our dining room. We decided that shiplap was an absolute must because it made the space look a little more formal while still keeping things relaxed and coastal. Here’s how we did this DIY home decor project on a budget!
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
-6 inch pieces of plywood cut to 1/4 of inch
-White Paint
-Level
-Jigsaw
Step One: Before beginning, sand every piece of wood to get it even and ready for a coat of paint. Imperfections in the wood will show up more after painting, so make sure you’re really thorough!
Step Two: Once sanded, begin attaching them to the desired wall. I started from the top and ended at the bottom. It’s best practice to remove all outlet covers, and use a jigsaw to easily cut around the outlet. Mark all studs prior to nailing, so you can easily nail into the studs. Use a penny (or something similar) as a spacer when nailing planks on top of one another.
Step Three: Break out the paint brushes! It’s time to get a painting! Paint often will lay uneven on shiplap surfaces, but small paint brushes will allow you to get in there and clean things up. If you paint begins to gunk between the cracks, use a paint stirrer or a skewer to smooth down the excess paint. Wipe it in between uses. Use a foam roller for the smoothest finish when working on the other areas of the board, and always paint in the same direction!
Step Four: Apply as many coats as you think is necessary! But wait until it completely dries before moving on to another coat, or hanging wall decor!
