My husband’s family has a rotating timeshare out in Hawaii, so we try to go as often as possible! We’ve made it our mission to visit each one of the islands, and Kauai has by far been our favorite. Though much smaller than the Big Island, Maui, or others, this island is a bit more rugged and full of adventure. If you’re planning your own trip to the area, add some of these secret things to do in Kauai to your travel list. They might be the highlight of your trip!
Secret Things To Do In Kauai With Kids
Naturally, traveling with kids limits your options a little bit when it comes to wild adventure, but there are still fun things to do in Kauai with your kids. Below are a few of my favorite:
Take A Helicopter Tour: Looking for an adventurous way to see the island from the sky? Take a helicopter tour! There are several helicopter tour companies throughout the island, and as long as you reserve a flight time ahead, these can be so much fun. However, these rides can be pricey, sometimes costing as much as $150 per person.
Na Pali Coast Boat Tour: If you’d rather see it from the boat as opposed to the sky, head out on a boat tour along the coast! I recommend charting a boat (or reserving a spot on a tour) from Captain Andy’s. Typically, a snorkeling session is a part of the itinerary as is a meal of some kind.
Go For Shaved Ice: Shaved Ice is a Hawaiian delicacy. Seriously. It tastes so much better here! Visit a shaved ice store at some point during your vacation. They can usually be found in strip malls, outdoor shopping areas, and we even found one on the beach! SO GOOD.
Secret Things To Do In Kauai On Your Honeymoon
If you are visiting Kauai on your honeymoon, chances are you want things that are a little more laid back and romantic. Here are some of my favorites:
Sunset Sail: Captain Andy’s (as mentioned above) also offers a sunset cruise for you and your new spouse. Take in a gorgeous Hawaiian sunset while eating dinner with champagne. What could be better?
Surf Lessons: If you and your new spouse have never been surfing, why not learn together from a local surf school? Or, if you already know what you are doing head to Poipu Beach for some wave action.
North Shore: Head to the North Shore for a leisurely day of beach lounging, dining, and even a little shopping at some of the boutiques nearby. There are even a pretty lighthouse and some waterfalls along the way.
Secret Things To Do In Kauai For Adventure
If you like tons of adventure, you are definitely on the right island! The adventurous things to do are practically what Kauai is known for!
Head To Secret Beach: Its just like the name sounds! This beach is a local secret. You can find the path leading down to this beach on the right side of when turning onto Kalihiwai Road from Kuhio Highway. It’s about a ten-minute walk down to the shores, but the view is worth it.
Hike To The Falls In Waimea Canyon: Waipoo Falls is one of the tallest waterfalls on the island, take the Canyon Trail because it will lead you right up behind the water. The hike itself is only 3.2 miles, and you can swim in the falls at the very end. You might even recognize this fall from a movie.
Visit The Forbidden Island: A small, barren island just off the coast of Kauai, only those in the Robinson family, who own the island, can access the spot. Fortunately, you can take a helicopter tour through Nilhau tours, and it will take you to a remote beach on the side of the island here. Pretty cool!
