Okay, now I know that everyone is guilty of committing a home decor faux pas every here and there, but I was astounded to discover that I was committing MANY of these! Keep reading and make sure that you aren’t guilty of one of these decorating mistakes.
Mistake #1: Hanging Photos Too High
What good is a piece of art that you have a really hard time seeing? Keep necks from straining by using this rule; divide your room in four sections from the top. Nothing should ever be hung from the first section!
Mistake #2: Lining Your Walls With Furniture
Do you remember when you were growing up, and your Mom kept telling you that pushing your furniture to the corners of the room was NOT a proper way to fake the appearance of a clean room? No, just me? Well, either way, Mom was right. Don’t line your walls with furniture. Instead, “float” a few pieces of furniture to the center of the room with footstools, chairs, and side tables.
Mistake #3: White Isn’t Always Best
While I love a classic white room just as much as the next person does, defaulting to white rooms can make spaces look boring. Keep things from looking dull by working with various shades of eggshell and grey. The added depth will make a huge difference!
Mistake #4: Keeping Things Too Formal
Remember when you’d head on over to grandma’s house over the weekend? And remember how you were absolutely NOT allowed to sit in areas of the house? What point is having a space if guests aren’t allowed (or welcome) to sit there. It’s always important to keep rooms looking classy and elegant while still appearing inviting. A chandelier and a comfy sofa are the perfect ways to do so!
Mistake #5: Using Toilet Rugs
You know those horrific rugs that have a hole cut out through them so they fit around your toilet? They’re heinous! And a total design mistake. Instead of opting for the rugs that “hug the toilet” go for small, square ones instead. It’ll make your bathroom look much more chic!
Mistake #6: Leaving Your Cords Cluttered
Not only is leaving your cords a cluttered and tangled mess a complete fire hazard, but it’s an eyesore as well. Organize your cords with shoe boxes, zip ties, or labels. Learn more cord organizing tricks over at Jennifer Jones.
Mistake #7: Keeping Your Outdated Hardware
When’s the last time you ACTUALLY updated and replaced your cabinetry hardware? Too long? I thought so! Say sanoara to your old and outdated cabinet hardware! It’s time to get rid of it for good! Switching it out can update a space in almost no time at all. All you need is a screw driver or drill! Super easy, right?
