Over Christmas, I was lucky enough to spend a few weeks in Maui, Hawaii with my family. We frolicked on Kaanapali Beach, drove the Road To Hana (an absolute must-do for any travelers!), and got plenty of Vitamin D. Though we had a blast on our Hawaiian vacation, we couldn’t help but wish the island were a little bit less-crowded over the holiday. To get away from the crowds, we booked a snorkeling trip off the coast of the private island, Lanai. While the island is home to a single stunning resort (the one that Bill Gates’ was married on) no other tourists are allowed to stay on the island. It’s strictly for locals, and as a result, the island is absolutely gorgeous!
Cocos Keeling
These tiny islands are located between Australia and Sri Lanka, and only two of them are inhabited by full-time citizens. Its out-of-the-way location makes this vacation destination the perfect place for those of us looking for a little alone time. While you’re here, visit one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches, Cossies Beach and explore the water through snorkeling, paddleboarding, or parasailing.
Grenada
Part of the islands of Grenada are some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful. While the islands are relatively quiet during most times of the year, they grow lively each August during the “Spice Isle” festivities. If seclusion is what you’re after, plan your trip after the festivities. Not crowded islands like these are amazing!
Dominica
Another stunning Caribbean island, the island of Dominica is known for its “Champagne Reef.” Not only should you set aside some time to enjoy the reef, by way of snorkeling or scuba diving, but you should make it a point to visit the Emerald Pool Nature Preserve as well. It’s one of the less traveled islands on this list, but its scenery is easily one of the most beautiful.
Reunion Island
Exoctic? Yes! Located in the calm waters of the Indian Ocean, Reunion Island is known for its volcanic activity. While the volcanoes aren’t active today, visitors can head up to the crater to enjoy the views while relishing in the rainforest-like climate on the lower elevations. But, just because it’s called Reunion Island doesn’t mean it’s busy, this island is one of the most remote in the Indian ocean.
Tobago
Yes, this is the other half of Trinidad! The smaller island of Tobago is known for its world-renowned coconut ice cream. Not only is the ice cream incredible, but guests should also check out Pigeon Point and the Tobago forest reserve. Tobago is one of the most beautiful not crowded islands!
Nosy Be
As soon as you step off the plane, you’ll feel immediately relaxed on the lesser-traveled island of Nosy Be! I would attribute your relaxed attitude to the Ylang Ylang plants that grow around the island. The plants smell amazing, and are shown to help you relax! Make sure to explore the island’s nature preserves.
