Dreaming of heading south for some warmth this winter season? Why not head to Oaxaca, Mexico? Though there aren’t miles and miles of gorgeous beaches (though there are a few) Oaxaca is known for its stunning colonial buildings, temples, and cathedrals. This location is definitely rich in history! So, if this sounds like your kind of trip, keep reading for more of my favorite things to do in the area.
South Of The Border: Oaxaca, Mexico
Head to The Culture Museum
The Culture Museum of Oaxaca is full of cultural exhibits that really let you dive into what life is like in the area. There is a botanical garden near the museum, too. I highly recommend visiting both locations! As you walk through the museum you’ll find tons of artifacts dug up from the sites nearby. Including a turquoise covered skull bone. It’s fascinating just to sit back and look at it all!
Visit The Temple De Santo Domingo Church
The Santo Domingo Church is one of the most photographed places in all of Oaxaca, and one of the most beautiful. I recommend making it a point to visit this location! The chapel itself is covered in gold and the rest of the church is just architecturally gorgeous. However, guests who plan on visiting the church should keep in mind that it is considered respectful to dress appropriately when visiting these landmarks. Wear shorts that cover below the knee and shirts that cover the shoulders.
Check Out The Flea Markets
It doesn’t matter where you go in Oaxaca, there’s a flea market around every corner. Head to one of these markets to embrace the flavor of local food, pick up fresh produce, or even find some unique souvenirs for your family back home. It’s easy to spend hours every day here! Mercado Democracia is the best in the area if you are looking for tasty food, so make it a point to head there for dinner one evening.
Check Out The World’s Widest Tree
This tree is MASSIVE. Over 2,000 years old, the Arbor del Tule is quite an impressive sight to see. Though this tree is a bit out of the way, make a day of the trip and stop to see the Mitla ruins or the petrified waterfall. There are so many unique things to see in Oaxaca!
Drink Mezcal At Los Amantes
Oaxaca is known for making world-renowned Mezcal, an alcoholic tequila made from the agave plant. Everyone should try it at least once while you are in the area. Though you can try Mezcal at just about any restaurant in the area, I recommend stopping for a drink at Los Amantes. It is a tiny, local joint with a wide variety of Mezcal drinks.
