A few years ago, I found myself in a tricky situation: I. Was. So. Tired. Of being a Mom. I know, it sounds terrible. I just needed a Big Sur coastal vacation with my husband; sans kids.
The decision to vacation without the kids came to me suddenly after an already-tiring day ended with a disgusted “I’m not eating that” for dinner. I do love them, but aren’t kids brutal sometimes?
It didn’t take much for me to convince my husband to head with me to Big Sur, California for the weekend. We knew we had to start goin’ coastal, and I knew I wanted to see this area of the country. This coastal destination is to die for.
Big Sur
Where To Stay
We stayed here for five days and I loved every minute spent in one of these Yurts! They had the basic necessities and it was pretty much all we needed. My husband surprised me halfway with a few nights in a room like this, and I have never been more relaxed! It was simply the best, everyone should do it at least once.
Things To Do
McWay Falls
Located in Julia Pfeiffer State Park, this 80-foot tall waterfall can be seen from Highway 1. The waterfall is 37 miles from the town of Carmel, near the Big Sur region of California. We drove to see it, but it was completely worth it! It flows year round, and if you stay to watch the sunset, you simply won’t be disappointed! Hikers can even hike down to the beach and enjoy the sunset on a blanket there. We spotted someone having the most beautiful wedding there! When goin’ coastal, this stop is a must-see.
Pfeiffer Beach
One of the most beautiful public beaches in the region, we loved every moment spent here! The beach is open late, and you can find shades of pink sand and really cool rock formations. Once again, if you’re here at sunset, you are absolutely in for a treat. You can actually hike to the beach from McWay falls, it’s about a four-mile round trip.
Bixby Creek Bridge
This bridge is located on the Big Sur coast and accessible from Highway 1. If you’re visiting, make sure to get your cameras ready, this bridge is one of the most photographed bridges in California. The bridge took a year to complete and was opened in 1932. We took the best photo here!
Hikes
Point Lobos
Looking for sea lions? Head to Point Lobos, in Carmel, California. It takes an hour to get to Point Lobos from Carmel, but it’s a gorgeous drive so you’ll hardly notice the time passing! There’s a whaling museum, beautiful hiking trails, and tons of wildlife. Point Lobos is a day well spent!
Where We Ate
Located on the Big Sur cliffside, guests can enjoy a craft beer or a delicious meal with a gorgeous view. It’s open daily, for both lunch and dinner, and the view will probably make you think you’re on the LOST island! This was my favorite restaurant on our goin’ coastal vacation!
I had the most delicious slice of pie at this restaurant, so it’s a diner I will always recommend! Much like all diners, they offer anything from the classic bacon and eggs to burgers and sandwiches. Definitely get the pie though. Just do it.
