6 Ridiculously Cheap Places To Travel In The US With Kids
Chincoteague Island, Virginia
A tiny island off the coast of Virginia, Chincoteague is the perfect destination for animal lovers. Home to wild ponies, over 350 species of birds, and even families of foxes, you are sure to learn a lot about wildlife on this relaxing beach vacation. I recommend visiting in late July, as this is when the majority of the wildlife on the island is most active. And if you like to go off-roading, I highly recommend checking out Toms Cove Hook. This is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, AND you can go ATVing!
Cape Hatteras Island, North Carolina
Though not as wildlife-filled as that of Chincoteague island, Cape Hatteras is a great (affordable) destination all on its own. With miles of white, sandy beaches to enjoy you can go snorkeling, paddle boarding, surfing, and even fishing. Also make sure that you check out the lighthouse on the island, as this is one of the most prominent locations on the island for whale watching. Located in the Outer Banks, make sure that you bring warm clothing even in the Summer. The winds can get chilly!
Hilton Head, South Carolina
Though this famous island is known for golfing and beach relaxation, it’s actually one of the most affordable beach destinations in the United States. There are tons of great museums full of rich history, as well as a nature reserve, and several gorgeous beaches. Immerse yourself in the history of this island when you go, there really is so much of it! And who knows, you might just run into Alison DiLaurentis away on summer vacation with her grandmother. 😉
South Padre Island, Texas
I have family that lives in the Austin area, and so we would always drive down to South Padre for the weekend while we were away visiting. With miles of sandy beaches and the calmest waters ever, you can go paddle boarding, snorkeling, or even just for a nice swim! Even better, there are several water parks in the area if your kids are looking for a thrill while on vacation. South Padre is the perfect getaway for all.
San Juan, Puerto Rico
An unincorporated US territory, Puerto Rico is one of the cheapest destinations (other than that kind-of expensive flight over) in the country. While I recommend flying into San Juan (it is cheapest), for the most fun head out on the island to the smaller towns to explore local life. The beaches are a lot cleaner in these areas and things like food, souvenirs, etc are cheaper (and better made!) when found in these areas as well. Make sure to check out the El Yunque National Forest.
Huntington Beach, California
A bit more expensive than some of the other destinations on this list, you can do a lot for cheap in Huntington Beach, just as long as you stay away from the Disney side of California. With a long boardwalk full of shops and wonderful places to eat, you are sure to find something to do. Plus, if your kids always wanted to learn how to surf, Huntington Beach is one of the best places in the world to do so. I recommend visiting in September, so you can watch the annual dog surfing competition–REALLY.
