Decorating Mistakes That Make Your House Look Filthy

April 26, 2018 by Brittney Jacobson 2 Comments

I’ve made my fair share of decorating mistakes! And haven’t we all? We’ve all be through our fair share of early apartments! Little did I know at the time, some of my most commonly made decorating mistakes actually made my house look super messy. If you’re making these decorating mistakes, stop right now because they make your home look SUPER messy! Here are the decorating mistakes to avoid.

Inspiration for this post came from My List of Lists

Misplaced Furniture

For the most part, furniture should be kept away from the walls, as this makes your home look cluttered and busy. Evenly space out the furniture in your home, and plan their spacing around one central item (here it’s the coffee table.)

Messy Gallery Walls

Gallery walls are a great way to showcase favorite photos in your home. Except, if you’re looking to keep things clutter free, your gallery wall should be planned out. Unlike the photo below, keep your photos all the same size and in the same frames! Use this guide from How to Build it when planning your gallery wall.

Unscaled Furniture

One of the biggest things that makes your house look messy is unscaled furniture. Keep furniture pieces the same size (like the barstools below) for a clean, put together look.

Unfluffed Pillows

Guilty of this one! I make it a point to fluff my couch pillows and cushions once weekly, but it should really be done more often. Sagging and drooping pillows can make your house look messy and kind of “blah.” Fluff them up quickly when expecting guests!

A Disorganized Pantry

The kitchen is known as the heart of your home, and if you have a messy pantry, it can throw your whole house out of whack! Purchase these tupperware containers from Amazon and get your pantry organization streamlined and under control. If my pantry looked this good, I’d want to show it off to everyone!

Unlabeled Baskets

Believe it or not, unlabeled baskets can make your home look filthy! Instead of digging around looking for hand soap, labeled baskets will keep everything in perfect shape! You’ll never leave your storage baskets askew again!

Cluttered Bookshelves

To keep things organized and clean, make sure your SHELVING looks organized and clean! Keep them uncluttered by choosing your home decor pieces wisely. Pick sparse decorations, as this will provide your home with the best look.

Cluttered Countertops

Just like your shelving, you need to make sure that your countertops are also uncluttered! Cute accents like bowls of fruit are perfectly fine, but keep things sparse on your countertops as well. Minimal counter clutter makes for a better home!

    FILTHY?????

No filth that I can see. There are some rules about decorating, but what is more important is that it is what one wants in their house.

You must have never seen a filthy house. Maybe messy would be a better word.
