How to Paint Upholstery

April 6, 2017 by Brittney Jacobson Leave a Comment

Thrift store furniture finds are awesome! But sometimes their color can leave much to be desired. Sometimes a piece has “good bones” and a horrible color! But I am here to tell you that you should purchase it anyway; you can always repaint it! Here’s how!

There are several different varieties of fabric paint out there. You can even purchase a spray paint for fabrics! Although the spray paint is pretty cool, I’ve always found better luck with using a regular brush paint for upholstery.

Begin by adding water to dilute your paint, it should be diluted enough that it “soaks” up into the fabric fibers.

Use a brush or a rag to paint the diluted paint into your fabric. Use the rag to rub the paint into the fabric if it isn’t absorbing properly. It is SUPER important that you allow the paint to soak fully into the fabric. Too much paint can leave your furniture feeling like crusty cardboard.

It might be super tempting to take a seat on your new and revamped furniture, but don’t even think about it! At least not yet..make sure that your fabric is completely dry before sitting down, or doing anything else! This usually takes about 24 hours.

If you want your furniture to have a bit of a more “weathered” look, you can use sandpaper to file things down. Wait enough time between dries to try this, or you could end up ruining your furniture!
