For our second wedding anniversary, my husband surprised me with a luxurious river cruise! It was an absolutely incredible experience and I saw so much of the country that I previously hadn’t explored. In March of next year, my parents are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary and I’m looking forward to surprising them with a river cruise. They have no idea what’s in store for them and I can’t wait to explore the scenery as a family! River cruises are incredible, so let’s set sail!
Seine River
There’s no better way to see the gorgeous sites of Europe than when sailing down the Seine River. Most Seine river cruise takes travelers on a journey from You’ll stop and explore museums, eat the most delicious food and maybe even enjoy a few glasses of wine. There are “artificial beaches” that pop up along the shoreline in peak season, so do stop and enjoy one of them! More info here.
Rhine River
If you are looking for an eight-day long getaway with stops in four countries, I recommend a cruise down the Rhine River! You’ll travel from Basel to Amsterdam enjoying stunning views and vibrant colors. If looking to relax and enjoy the scenery, head to the sandy beach in Rhine, Germany.
Main River
Explore Germany on a cruise down the Main River. You’ll stop at many well-known World War II destinations along the way making it a perfect river cruise option for anyone who loves history and a few adult beverages!
Mekong River
Float down the Mekong River for a 7-day cruise in Cambodia and Vietnam! This tropical vacation is extremely rural but travelers can expect trips to the floating markets, local villages, and even some of the scared villages in the area. Because this river cruise is relatively rural, it is recommended that visitors be in good health. This river cruise isn’t for relaxation!
New England Islands
Travel through the islands of New England on a 7-day river cruise featuring stops in Martha’s Vineyard, Block Island, Nantucket, and Newport. All cruising is done on a small cruise line for more of an intimate experience and travelers can enjoy tasty local cuisines like a clam and crab bake! I hear that the miles of sandy beach available for exploring on this luxurious river cruise are absolutely unparalleled. Make sure to taste the salt water taffy, too! More info on the river cruise here.
Lower Mississippi River
Cruise from New Orleans to Memphis on a classic paddleboard riverboat. You’ll find yourself immersed in scenery straight out of Huckleberry Finn with stops at local plantation homes, Civil War battlefields, and nightly entertainment that will help you create lasting memories with your family. Personally, I recommend lounging around on the sundeck during the day!
