Smooth Sailing: Easy Nautical DIY Decor Ideas Using Rope

July 30, 2020 by Brittney Jacobson Leave a Comment

Nautical rope is one of my favorite things to decorate my coastal home with. Not only is it easy to work with, but it looks great for a variety of projects. Not to mention, the roughness of the rope adds a great texture that cannot be beaten otherwise. If you’ve got a ton of nautical rope, and an itch to create a rope crafts project, try one of the easy nautical DIY projects below.

Rope crafts are easy to do and create a unique look for home decor whether it be rustic or nautical. Learn how to hang things from rope, or use it to create your own custom decor. Easy Nautical DIY Coasters
All you’ll need is your favorite rope (I use 10-inch pieces!) and a piping hot glue gun. To create your own coasters, add a dollop of hot glue to the end of the rope and tightly circle it in. Continue circling the rope tightly, and a dollop of hot glue here and there to keep the whole thing looking nice and tidy. Once you’ve reached the end, add more hot glue and wrap it onto itself. These are so easy!

Easy Nautical DIY Mirror
Pick up an old mirror at the thrift store in any shape or size that you think would look best in your own home. Next, bring it home and attach nautical rope to the edges with hot glue, circling around the framing and attaching the rope so that it covers any and all exposed wood. Repeat the process until the entire frame is covered. Hang this in an entryway or a living room to enjoy it’s neat texture all the time!

Easy Nautical DIY Anchor Wall Art
What’s great is that you need virtually no heavy power tools to create this project! It’s perfectly low-key for some weekend fun. To create, you’ll need to create the frame for the anchor first. Cut a 24″x24″ piece of wood and several 1″ x 24″pre-cut pieces for the frame, assembling it and painting as desired before moving on. Next, pick up an anchor stencil and use a piece of chalk to stencil it on to the flat part of your frame. Next, hot glue your nautical rope following the pattern of your anchor stencil. Pretty cool huh? Full tutorial here.

Easy Nautical DIY Lamp
Using hot glue and the same even wrapping motion as I explained in the idea for the mirror, cover your lamp base in nautical rope for a fun DIY as well. Simply pick up an old lamp that you didn’t necessarily love and revamp it with hot glue and rope. If glued tightly enough, you can enjoy these for years to come.

Easy Nautical DIY Rug
You’ll need over 100 feet of rope to weave this at home, but I cannot get over how gorgeous it looks braided together! You’ll only need hot glue and scissors for this project as well, so I think it is probably one that is safe to involve the kiddos in. Gardenista has a great tutorial explaining how to weave it all together in only an afternoon.

Easy Nautical DIY Vase
You’ll want a thinner nautical rope or twine to make this DIY project a reality. Because vases are often smaller than some of the other ideas mentioned, you’ll want something a little less thick to work with. Using mason jars, empty honey jars, or even an ugly vase that you would like to cover up, begin winding the rope around the vase just as you did for the other DIY projects. Repeat until all of the surfaces are covered. Who knew all of these would be so easy?
